Opposite page, from top: The master bedroom; the elegant dining room. Photography by Ansel Olson It may be one space, but the new presidential suite at the Pinehurst Resort was not a small undertaking for Glavé & Holmes Associates. Not only is it the first of its kind for the historic resort, which was founded in 1895 by Boston native James Walker Tufts, but also the seven-room, 1,800-square-foot suite took two years to complete. In fact, the Richmond, Virginia-based firm completed nearly 15 projects while working on this one. “Pinehurst is, of course, America’s best known golf resort and has the unique distinction of being the ‘sister course’ to Scotland’s venerated St. Andrews,” says Gary Inman, director of hospitality design for the firm. “None [of our projects] has been more unique than the presidential suite.” Inman, along with Randy Holmes, owner and principal of the firm, drew inspiration from the original vision of Tufts: he conceived Pinehurst as a place of recuperation for those suffering from tuberculosis, and hired legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead to design the village as a picturesque New England-style even thought it is located in the Sandhills of North Carolina. With that in mind, the designers drew from nature, in terms of colors (tan, brown, green, and maroon hues) and motifs (leaf and vine inspired), and millwork keeps in line with Tufts’ original vision. And to create a truly authentic local feel, the designers chose pottery from Seagrove, a local community near the resort where generations of talented potters work; furniture was made in North Carolina; antiques abound throughout; and work by local watercolorists and archival images of early Pinehurst drawn from the significant collection of the Tuft archives hang on the walls. These “storytelling” aspects were Inman’s favorite touches. As the resort president Don Padgett said during the opening event: “If Mr. Tufts walked into the suite today, he would feel right at home.” But the project—built in the west wing of the Carolina hotel in an area that used to house administrative office complete with dropped ACT gird ceilings and fluorescent light fixtures—didn’t come without its challenges. Besides significant demolition, construction took place while the hotel was in full operation, so as not to disturb guests, work could only be done during the day and materials were brought to the site through the porch area. 48 march 2009 www.newh.org tel 800.593.NEWH http://www.newh.org
