Roughly 200 industry people attended the 2009 NEWH Leadership Conference in January in San Diego. The bi-annual conference kicked off with a party at the Design Within Reach showroom, hosted by the Los Angeles Founding Chapter and the Southern Counties Chapter. Highlights of the three-day conference held at the Hotel Solomar included an inspiring keynote on the “Fourteen Points of Leadership” by Bob Maricich, CEO of the World Market Center; a speech by Tom Maier of GVS Hospitality delving into how different generations act in the workplace; a panel discussion about opportunities in 2009 moderated by Michelle Finn, Hospitality Design Group, with Anita Degen, Degen & Degen, Maier, and Raj Chandnani, WATG; and breakout sessions, ranging from improving interview skills to creating an effective business strategy in a tough market. And for the first time ever, the conference included an entire day devoted to sustainability (see page 32). In true NEWH fashion, students and past scholarship recipients were honored with a tour and dinner at the San Diego Zoo, and Cliff Tuttle, ForestPerkins, and Deborah Herman Romano, Fabric Innovations, were given the Award of Excellence that night as well (see page 36). Around the Chapters Atlanta The chapter held its Scholarship Awards & Auction Event February 19th at the Soho Myriad gallery. The night included a live and silent auction with more than 30 donated items. Congratulations to the five scholarship awardees: Christa Mueller, University of Kentucky; Christy Stehle, Georgia Southern University; Heather Adams, University of Tennessee; Rodrick Beazer, the Art Institute of Culinary Arts; and Ginger Law, Georgia Southern University. Houston The chapter held its annual 2008 Student Scholarship Awards Dinner at the Bering & James Art Gallery on January 29th. The night included a silent auction for the first time ever, and Toni Cosper, the 2008 winner of the NEWH Sustainable Design Competition, spoke about her award and sustainable design. The chapter also hosted its annual holiday toy drive at NOE Restaurant & Bar at the Omni Houston Hotel on December 16th. Thanks to all of those involved on both events. Other programming included the third part of the Houston’s Hottest Hotels program at the Hilton Americas in October, and a monthly social hosted by Design Origins by Shaw at the Sonoma Wine Bar & Café in November. North Central The chapter held its holiday gala December 11th at the Westin Galleria. Sixty people attended, and the night included a tour of the new property, dinner, and an auction with 75 items including furniture, sporting tickets, and nights out on the town, among others. The chapter also awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Marcie Franklund at North Dakota State University. Rocky Mountain More than 200 people came to eat, drink, gamble, and congratulate scholarship winner Joan Geyer at the 2008 Scholarship Casino Night at the Event Center in Coors Field. At the end of the evening, top winners took home prizes from Sirius Radio, as well as local spas and restaurants, and top bidders grabbed prizes from the silent auction.
