Conference Roundup Miami on the Mind Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique) has a new name and focus—HD Americas. Held in Miami, the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, the newly rebranded tradeshow and conference will put a special emphasis on this emerging and growing market—from the keynote speakers and conference sessions to the innovative products debuting on the show floor. Here are a few highlights of what’s taking place at the Miami Beach Convention Center, September 24-25th. For more: www.hdamericasexpo.com • Moises Micha and Carlos Couturier, founders and managing partners of lifestyle hotel company Grupo Habita, will headline the conference. In a conversation with Hospitality Design magazine’s editor in chief, Michael Adams, the twosome will discuss their unique concepts that have changed the Mexican hotel market and their recent expansion to New York and into the hostel business. • HD’s signature event is back with a focus on the Americas. Speed meet with 15 hotel brand executives, owners, development trackers, and developers—from the likes of Hard Rock, Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Trump, and many others—as they share their experience working in the region, rotating tables every 10 minutes. • Check out a slew of international exhibitors including Brazilian Furniture (Brazil); Lamitech S.A.S. (Colombia); Omni Décor Spa (Italy); Svalson AB (Sweden); and Turnstyle Designs Ltd (United Kingdom). • Listen in on engaging conference sessions, from case studies on Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Haiti’s first branded hotel, the Best Western Pétion-Ville, to discussions on cruise ship design and the challenges of designing, purchasing, and developing in Latin America. • And don’t miss the newest and greatest that Miami has to offer during three NEWH-sponsored site visits to the James Royal Palm, the Lord Balfour, and the Gale South Beach & Regent Hotel. Get Some Sleep Some 4,000 attendees and 150 exhibitors will gather at the Sleep event, November 20-21 at the Business Design Centre in London. A highlight of the annual fair is the Sleep Hotel exhibition, where designers—working with fit-out specialists and product suppliers of their choice—build out demanding brief-driven hotel concepts on the show floor. (Shown is the 2012 winning concept by Scott Brownrigg and Wilmott Dixon.) This year, Kelly Hoppen, BDP, the Hickson Design Partnership, and Purpose Design will create a junior suite in a fictitious hotel originally built in the 1960s during the heyday of ‘Pop Art,’ translating the radical spirit of this cultural movement into a contemporary experience that is relevant today. An added dimension is that the Barbican, London’s leading multiarts venue, which will be running a major exhibition Pop Art Design between October and February, has joined forces with Sleep. As a result, the Barbican exhibition curator, Catherine Ince, 16 www.newh.org will be selecting the winning room set at the event with fellow judges, Anthony Ingham, Starwood’s vice president of luxury and design brands, EMEA, and Conrad Smith, managing director of ReardonSmith Architects. “Sleep Hotel provides a great platform for designers, with their fit-out team and suppliers, to show just how imaginative they can be,” says Smith. “As a judge last year, I was so impressed by the talent, enthusiasm and attention to detail that all the contenders demonstrated, and by the fact that the sets weren’t just showbiz. They were rooms with great ideas for real hotels.” Nous Design is creating the bar for the Sleep Hotel. “We will be creating a dynamic social experience,” promises Nir Gilad, creative director at Nous. “Without giving too much away at this point, think taps flowing with champagne and ice trays exuding mist!” For more: www.thesleepevent.com http://www.hdamericasexpo.com http://www.thesleepevent.com http://www.newh.org
