Sustainability Point of View Branded Success The Green Voice has caught on. Fast. NEWH Sustainable Hospitality delivers branded Green Voice seminars, webinars, and discussions on sustainable design topics—and they are in constant demand at global tradeshows, conferences, and events. Next up: A partnership of Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) and NEWH Sustainable Hospitality on a Green Voice series at HD Expo in Las Vegas in May, and a collaboration with the Green Lodging and Hospitality Conference in Orlando, set for this fall. Above and right: Green Voice sessions at last year’s Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo). Green Voice at HD Expo, May 15-17th Green Voice takes the stage in an informal expo-hall setting with four Green Voice discussions, plus a Green Voice panel during the NEWH Student Scholarship Awards Luncheon. On May 15th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., vice president NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Dina Belon, and sustainability/ energy specialist, the Peabody Orlando, hosts the fi rst of NEWH’s Green Voice Conversations with the Experts series, on the topic of “Climate Change and Coastal Development: What Do Hotels Need to Know?” In an interactive-audience format, she will interview Dr. Mark Westneat, curator, Department of Zoology Field Museum of Natural History, director, Biodiversity Synthesis Center of the Encyclopedia of Life, and adjunct professor and lecturer, evolutionary biology, the University of Chicago. At noon, vice president NEWH Sustainable Hospitality David Mahood, and partner, Olive Designs and Olive Hospitality Consulting, moderates a panel of experts on the topic “Sustainable Hospitality in the Crossroads of Climate Change” with speakers Adrienne Pumphrey, global head, Adoba Eco Hotel and Suites; Dr. Westneat; Gary Dollens, senior vice president, product & brand development, global operations center, Hyatt Hotels; and JoAnna Abrams, CEO, MindClick SGM. Mahood and his co-presenters take a deep dive into changing climatic patterns that affect business today and factor into decisions for the future of tourism and hotel development. Green Voice Conversations with the Experts continue at 2:30 p.m. with David Tracz, co-founding principal, STUDIO3877, interviewing MindClick CEO Abrams on “Why Companies Need Environmental Accounting.” On Thursday, May 16th, the conversations start at 10:30 a.m. with “The Marketing and Reporting of a ‘Green’ Mission” where Green Lodging News editor Glenn Hasek talks with Adoba’s Pumphrey. At 2:30 p.m. in “Sustainable Practices with Successful Business Results,” Lorraine Francis, Cadiz Collaboration, will interview Tracz about how to make sustainable changes help the overall bottom line. Many sustainable initiatives come with cost but have an excellent payback. Emerging practitioners have found successful means of increasing payback, which can be reproduced at other properties. Stand-out format Such candid talks make Green Voice stand out at HD Expo. Belon likes the quick-pace format—each slated for 30 minutes. Says Belon, “We are excited to offer a continuing series of sustainable 14 www.newh.org seminars. The conversational sessions will offer an interactive approach and present an opportunity to participate in a question and answer discourse on potentially life-changing topics.” And that was the goal—and inspiration—behind the Green Voice series. According to David Mahood, “At fi rst, the concept was to fi ll a void in sustainable education programming for HD Expo by bringing together individuals from disparate backgrounds to provide their unique perspective on sustainable hospitality and beyond. Th is range of perspective allows for a fundamentally unique conversation. No one Green Voice seminar can ever be the same as another. Th is approach, which I have always preferred, serves the basic purpose of helping people connect the dots of sustainable living. And, in the end, that is what will best serve our industry.” Online options Serving the industry means offering online options, too. Belon and Green Voice webinar chairman Gary Golla, and associate, studio leader hospitality, SERA Architects, raised the bar in 2012 with the fi rst Green Voice Webinar Series, a live, web-based, accredited, two-day conference on sustainable design for the global hospitality industry. According to Golla, “The compelling content and the web format allows for participation for those who may not be attending conferences where these topics are covered, but want access to the information.” Notes Pumphrey, NEWH director of sustainable hospitality, “Our organization advocates for continued learning, and the webinar programs we have designed will help accelerate the transformation of sustainability in both organization and community.” More from Green Voice NEWH Sustainable Hospitality’s Green Voice branded a mainstage session at the recent NEWH Leadership Conference in San Francisco: “Meta-Trends in Sustainability—Shaping Our Future” with Clark Brockman, principal, SERA Architects. ❙❘❚ Stay up to date on Green Voice at www.newh.org/sustainablepages/sustainable-hospitality-about-us http://www.newh.org/sustainable-pages/sustainable-hospitality-about-us http://www.newh.org/sustainable-pages/sustainable-hospitality-about-us http://www.newh.org
