Q&A One-on-one with Stacey Berman Founder of Berman Purchasing, and secretary of NEWH, Inc. Why/how did you become involved with NEWH? Cindy Guthrie encouraged me to join the South Florida chapter in 2004. At first, I joined for the networking opportunities. But I soon found out that it was so much more than that. The scholarships that NEWH awards are a big part of why I continue to be involved. If you ever have the opportunity to sit on the scholarship committee in your chapter, I encourage you to do so. When you read those essays from the scholarship applicants, it gives you a true appreciation of what we do. What has it done for you? Professionally, it has provided me with opportunities to build business relationships that have led to new projects and collaborations. NEWH has also provided the forum for strengthening our supplier relationships. And personally, I've made friendships that have become incredibly important to me. As secretary of NEWH, Inc., were there any major initiatives you implemented or initiated? Although I did not start any new initiatives that were specific to my position, I've truly appreciated the chance to be involved in many areas of the board. The Executive Committee is constantly brainstorming and planning on how to grow and support the organization. What has been your NEWH highlight of the year so far? What are you most looking forward to? The highlight of the year for me was the Leadership Conference in San Francisco. I always look forward to our conferences. They just keep getting better and better. I can't wait for the next one in Dallas! How is business for you? What are you currently working on? It has been an amazing year for us. We are working a variety of projects across the U.S., from Hawaii to Florida. We have a nice mix of timeshare, select service, full service, and restaurant projects. Why hospitality? What do you love about the industry? Truth be told, I never set out to be in the hospitality industry. After I graduated from college, I stumbled upon temporary work at Servico Hotels and Resorts. I thought it would be a nice job for 22 www.newh.org the summer-fast forward 21 years later and here I am! I couldn't imagine doing anything else. It's in my blood now! What influencers are you paying attention to? In addition to following the major initiatives from the franchisors, and keeping up with new projects that are starting up by independent owners and operators, I get to work with many amazing interior designers-and I enjoy seeing the trends that are being implemented in a variety of ways on different projects. What's new and exciting in your hometown? Although I grew up in Potomac, Maryland, Jupiter, Florida, has become my adopted hometown. It is a small town at heart, but it also hosts major biotech companies, Major League spring training games, college campuses, great schools, parks, and beaches. I am very excited for winter to start-it's beautiful here from November to April. When you aren't at work or an NEWH event, where can we find you? Typically you can find me with my teenage sons, Noah and Daniel, and my dog Buster. We've just started fostering puppies that have been rescued from shelters, and when I can carve out a little 'me time,' I head outside for a long run. ❙❘❚ http://www.newh.org
