A PICTUrE IS STILL WorTh A ThoUSAnD WorDS
Design magazine Editors offer Their Tips

CInDy ALLEn
EDITor In CHIEF, INTERIoR DESIgN 1. Tell the whole story. show each space, but, more importantly, convey the personality, materiality, and details that express the feel of the design. 2. Accessories can quickly date the shot. Even in a gorgeous room an old drab couch won’t disappear, so take the extra effort to find pieces we’ve never seen before. 3. Punch it up! black may be a staple in fashion, but in design, beige is boring and a burst of color in a space goes a long way.

DAn rUBEnSTEIn
EDITor In CHIEF, SURFACE 1. When shooting interiors, always provide options with and without people and other styling objects. 2. Invest in a good retoucher, and provide press with welllit images in a variety of sizes for Web and print. 3. keep your vignettes to a minimum. Always provide uncropped options as pulled back as possible.

SUZAnnE STEPhEnS
DEPuTy EDITor, ARCHITECTURAL RECoRD 1. Lighting is everything. Don’t believe that daylight is the only way to go because it looks so natural. 2. Furniture arrangements that are too stiff are no good, but so are the compositions where the room is made to look artificially messy and lived in. 3. Having people in the photos is a good idea, but again, they shouldn’t look posed, nor distract from the composition.

nED CrAMEr
EDITor In CHIEF, ARCHITECT 1. more is more. Don’t whittle down the shoot to a few absolutely perfect images. Editors and bloggers want to choose from a broad range of pictures. 2. Photograph your interiors in use, with people. A static, empty image of a space doesn’t tell half the story that a populated picture does. 3. some photographers style interiors to excess and force models into artificial poses. If using a stylist, urge them to be reductive and aim for a natural result.

SUSAn SZEnASy
EDITor In CHIEF, METRoPoLIS 1. give it scale, either by using people or another device. 2. stop using that green apple. 3. Provide at least one overall view that shows as much of the space as possible.

John CZArnECKI
EDITor In CHIEF, CoNTRACT 1. Pick a photographer with experience shooting interior spaces, since these can be more challenging than exteriors. 2. Talk first. A strict modernist designer and a photographer who shoots more fanciful interiors may not be the right match. 3. before the shoot, secure the full compliment of rights to the photographs you will want and need not just now but for years to come.
