wherever you—the end user—are. Because that’s the only way that we are relevant. Everybody who visits a library comes with his or her own expectation of what it will be. We are trying to meet all those expectations. That’s a lot to ask of a space! I think one reason people like libraries so much is because they are fairly successful at that, being all things to all people. Libraries are supposed to be for everyone. Whether you walk into a little branch in Brooklyn or the Bibliotèque National de France, it’s still the same idea. Given how drastically the physical part of libraries has changed just in the past decade, how do you anticipate future evolution? One thing we did here, during our own renovation, was to invest in raised flooring where technology is concentrated. That way, we can always increase electricity, knowing that there will be a need for power and some kind of conduit—whatever the gadgets of the future, and whether or not we will be hosting servers. We cleared the decks so that future upgrades won’t be more costly because of something we did or did not do now. We also built a lot of smart technology into our conference space—which we are still debugging. That’s what you get when you go cutting edge! Speaking of technology, what are some of the ways it has impacted your work as a librarian?? Technology has enabled libraries to make their holdings much better known outside their own walls. You can search the world to find a book— without leaving your home. That search process, especially in parts of the world where card catalogs weren’t available, used to be a very big part of our specialization. Just finding out where the papers of someone you wanted to study were housed could be a research project in and of itself. The first online databases required a phone call to a computer in another location, which would rack up long-distance charges. So only librarians, who are trained to do that as efficiently as possible, were allowed to perform that search. Now there’s end-user searching with natural vocabulary. Anyone can go online or, with a little encouragement, understand how libraries set up their proprietary databases and search within those. Patrons have many more resources at their fingertips—and thus an even bigger problem sorting through them to find the relevant ones. So, in that respect, it’s the same as it’s always been.
