OPEN SOURCE

In some cases, stricter legal measures are the answer to knockoffs. But others in the design world see an opportunity to dismantle certain barriers to collaboration. While every designer, from student to starchitect, wants due credit for his or her ideas, the industry is starting to embrace a much more expansive philosophy thanks to the interconnectivity of the digital age. Adopting an open-source policy can result in tremendous accomplishments in a short amount of time.

At the forefront of this practice is the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture Digital Fabrication Lab—or, FABLab. Among its pedagogical initiatives is a combination fabrication seminar and architecture/design studio in which students translate designs to fabrication methods and develop an open-source library of algorithmic modelling tools based on Rhino 3-D software. The studio’s goal is to streamline the production of large numbers of unique components, particularly in processes involving multiaxis machines, which are considerably more complex to program. (Such machines are used to manufacture parts and molds in a range of architectural materials including metal, resin, wood, and glass.) While a few tools on the market attempt the same feat, none are open-source, and they are generally limited to specific fabrication processes that require a wide array of software. So far, the program’s open-source software has been used by a number of groups within the FABLab, which has also become part of a robotic fabrication alliance with several schools, including Carnegie Mellon University. Ultimately, this type of collaboration promises to streamline a slew of design and manufacturing processes, eliminate mistakes, and open up new understandings about how to manufacture built environments.
