In the computer lab, for example, patrons can choose between lounge chairs, stand-up stations for short-term surfing, and dedicated research sites suited to hunkering down for hours at a time. The variety of seating also accommodates visitors of different sizes and shapes. stand up to heavy use; the space had 68,000 visitors in July alone. Library board members requested indestructible selections that would last approximately 15 to 20 years. solutioN: Seating and tables are primarily hardwearing metal and plastic: sturdy yet colorful Emeco Navy chairs (made of recycled PET bottles) that come with a lifetime warranty along with low-maintenance lounges intended for outdoor use. Wood was avoided since it often falls victim to people carving their initials in it. Proportion was as important as longevity, says Rothe: “We looked at sizes appropriate to the scale of the building. Large white reading tables made sense, as did oversize lounge pieces with forms that tie into the concept of movement.”
