TED BOOKS

TED, the conference that inspired the world
to consume information in 18 minute morsels,
is moving into the publishing world. TED
Books-"shorter than a novel, but longer than
a magazine article"--are multi-media rich
publications of 20,000 words or less, designed
to be read in a single sitting. Some of the books
are inspired by TED talks while others are wholly
original. New books are released each month,
and are priced at $1.99 a pop. (You can also get
a year-long subscription via the TED Books app
for $14.99.) Here are our picks for the holiday
season-happy reading.

City 2.0: The Habitat of the Future and How
to Get There
TED Books
Megacities (urban center with populations of
10 million or more) are the way of the future. This
book, produced in partnership with the Atlantic
Cities, examines 12 proposed solutions to the
challenges inherent to the metropolis of the future:
pollution, crime, over-crowding. It explores how
cities can become hubs of "human connection,
fountains of creativity and exemplars of green
living," and it beings to lay out a road map for
getting there.

Living Architecture
Rachel Armstrong
Designer and architect Rachel Armstrong believes
that in order to re-imagine our cities and urban
areas, we need to fundamentally change the way
we make things. Armstrong argues that we can
grow "ecologically compatible buildings" by using
technologies that mirror those found in nature.
The implications of cities behaving more like
ecosystems and less like machines are vast,
and may even help us to more quickly recover
from natural disasters.

Tell Them I Built This
Emily Pilloton
This case for dramatically revamping vocational
education calls upon society to "build the change
we wish to see in the world." Author Emily Pilloton,
founder of design/build program Studio H in rural
North Carolina, recounts the story of the program's
contributions to design-driven education. Students
in the program (8th to 11th graders) apply their
knowledge of design to socially transformative
projects. Pilloton's fi rst group of students initiated,
designed and built a series of public chicken coops
and a 2,000 square-foot public farmer's market-
and were given the key to the city by the mayor.
The program has since expanded, and stands as
a model for building change in our communities.

The Happiness Manifesto
Nic Marks
Design has never been a field pursued purely for
economic reasons, and we know from our survey
in this very issue that happiness in the design
industry is based on a multitude of factors. In this
essay, Nic Marks argues that our society's focus
on economic prosperity as the root of happiness
has spawned a new set of social and environmental
problems, which may be undermining our own
well-being as well as the happiness of future
generations. Marks argues it's time we shift the
focus of policies and governance from economics
to quality of life.
