What inspired you to
work abroad?
MARI BALESTRAZZI I grew up traveling with my parents-as a kid I was fascinated with
time zones-and have always had a curiosity about other parts of the world. I had
lived and worked abroad for short stints in both Budapest and Frankfurt and enjoyed
learning about those cities and cultures from the inside out-so when an opportunity
to move to London presented itself I debated for about 30 seconds! I think I will
always be a bit of a nomad. You need to have a strong interest in how other people
live to practice abroad, and for me I think it was a natural progression to gravitate
toward that in my work.
D.B. KIM I had the chance to lead a group of talented, passionate young designers, help
them broaden their boundaries and learn new methods and ways to be more
creative. But being here in China, I'm also encouraging myself to become a better
designer. Every day I learn something fresh and inspiring, often about cultural
influences or different methods for approaching projects.

My spirit of curiosity. The chance to discover different countries,
people and cultures-working abroad is a great opportunity to grow. I've learned to
approach projects from the outside to the inside, which allows you to have a 360°
high level view of everything. Now my perception of everything is always global,
it doesn't matter if it's a product, a house, a major building or a whole city.
MAYA JANCZYKOWSKA It was an easy decision, really. It's rare today, as a designer,
to not be working on international projects. And we know how easy it is to be
globally connected....time and distance have been marginalized. But the greatest
reason to go abroad is the excitement of experience. It's difficult to explain what
travel does for the soul. Each new place I've gone-Beijing, Shanghai, Bangkok,
Singapore-has introduced me to a different way of working and given me new
ideas which permeate my practice.
