Behind the Issue

Our inside cover for this issue quotes visionaries in the worlds of art, anthropology
and social sciences, famous writers, humanitarian and political leaders, and even
the inimitable Julia Child. Their words communicate the power of influence, but
also speak to its limits-and even imply its dangers. They speak to the great
potential of an individual to enact change, or the impact a group of likeminded
people can have when working together. They talk about the origins of what has
influenced them-in some cases perpetuating the mystery of art's origins, in others
paying tribute to those who have gone before them.

Each of these luminaries had a tremendous influence within their fields, and many
transcended those fields to have a broader influence on the world around us. Take
for instance, design's own Charles Eames, whose name has become synonymous
with design ingenuity and quality. Even a casual design enthusiast can recognize
the linear connection between an Eames chair and the smattering of furniture
currently available in any mass market showroom, from IKEA to West Elm.
But perhaps more than anything, what they all share is a close affi liation with 2015's
buzzword dujour: Disruption. Influencers can often be found disrupting norms,
pushing us to find new and better ways of doing things. In design, we're seeing
that disruption manifest in how we're expanding the practice of Interior Design
internationally, and in the methods designers are using to reach clients and others
outside of our industry and bring design expertise to a broader audience.
Design is inarguably having a "moment." The power of design is seemingly touted
in a new forum every day-from magazine covers to TED talks, and design's
influence on the business, social and cultural communities has been well
documented. But crucially, just as designers are leveraging the power of design
to change other industries, they recognize the importance of remaining open to
outside influence themselves.
In this issue, we asked a number of our contributors and favorite bookworms to
recommend a recent read that influenced them. Their responses ranged from novels
to biographies, from recent magazine articles to business reports. The subject matter
varied as much as the genre, from divergent retellings of history to dynamic new
ways to look at the places in which we live and work. The design industry is clearly
looking for inspiration-and influence-in places we haven't considered before.
And being open to influence is just as critical to the health and prosperity of our
industry as bringing the message of design is to the world at large.
