Gamifying the Design Experience
Designers are also applying game principles to projects to influence people's
behavior and make user experiences more interactive and memorable. For instance,
co-working spaces with membership models and airline lounges might utilize
a progression of different "levels," using tiers of membership (and thus, brand
investment) to promote access to exclusive areas. The integration of GPS and
location-based technology can also add game-like qualities to a space, and influence
why people go places and what they expect when there. Anyone holding a smart
phone or other location-aware device and crossing a "geofence"-a virtual barrier
within a physical space-can turn the experience of moving through a space into
a game. Augmented reality technology like Yelp's Monocle can overlay information
about what's offered at a certain site, while location-aware technology like
Foursquare can alert users to nearby recommended locations and offer deals to get
people in the door. Some organizations are even making design and operations
changes based on data from check-ins and reviews: last year, in an article titled
"Hotels Use Online Reviews as Blueprint for Renovations," the New York Times
reported that hospitality brands from Omni to St. Regis were using customer data
to help plan their property upgrades.
Circulation and spatial organization can also be profoundly affected by these digital
tools. For instance, Qantas airlines recently implemented a radio frequency identification (RFID) program to help alleviate congestion problems at the airline's main
domestic terminal in Sydney. The terminal was running out of available space, with
frequent backups at counters and long lines for passengers. The carrier invested in
RFID badges for their top-level frequent flier customers. Kiosks in the check-in area
identify these tags, finding the passenger's reservation and assigning a seat based
on history and previously selected preferences. The same badge is scanned
at a baggage drop kiosk eliminating a line for checking luggage, and airline
personnel at the gate scan the tags in lieu of a boarding pass.
Qantas reports that the integration of the cards has resulted in a significant decrease
in congestion and lines, and has also made it possible for them to utilize the existing
terminal space and rearrange the kiosk location pattern, leading to a much more
efficient use of space. This past March, Qantas CIO, Luc Hennekens, gave an
interview in ITNews in Australia claiming to love it when the airport looks like it's
been deserted. "It looks like it's not in use because it is so efficient," Hennekens said.

Way to go, persistence pays off.
