Melissa Mizell, design director and principal
at Gensler in San Francisco, agrees. Mizell lives in
the Bay Area and enjoys the solitary experiences
of hiking and birding year round, and sees a clear
connection between how she experiences
California's varied terrain and the kinetic feel of
an interior terminal she helped design for San
Francisco's Airport's Terminal 2. "The design is not
a run-on sentence like so many other terminals,"
she says. "The ceiling is not all the same height and
there's a quality of light that is very mindful in
connecting to the experience of being outdoors,
even though you're in an airport."
And while social media makes it easier to research
far-flung places it's no substitute for in-person
experiences, and there are still places selfie sticks
don't go, like airport bathrooms. Mizell says that it
was her time spent in Japan that helped inspire her
to incorporate design elements such as lower sinks
and diaper changing tables inside stalls in SFO
Terminal 2. These details, she says, evoke a positive
emotional response in an otherwise banal
atmosphere. "I never would have made those
connections without exploring through travel,"
she adds.

Even second-hand inspiration can impact designers
in the most unexpected ways. Mizell notes that
when colleagues returned from a recent trip to
Israel it wasn't their subsequent photography
presentation that stuck with her: what really made
an impact was serving an Israeli breakfast for staff
at the meeting. "I'd never realized how wonderful
feta cheese, tomatoes, and cucumbers could be first
thing in the morning, and it changed my outlook
for the entire day," she says. "If you can think about
breakfast in a different way, you can think about
anything in a different way."
Others designers say engaging with nature
and physical activity helps encourage them to take
risks with their designs and convince clients to do
the same. Griz Dwight, principal and owner of
Grizform Design Architects in Washington DC,
is a fan of white water kayaking and skiing. Daring
on the rapids or slopes helps embolden him when
persuading, for example, a D.C. hospitality client
to put a huge laser-cut tree in the center of a
restaurant. "You have to charge full speed ahead
and say this is how we're going to do it," he says.
