Design's Bigger Picture

J

UAN CARLOS BAUMGARTNER, LEED AP, tells all of his clients
that designers are in the business of predicting the future. "[Designers]
do a lot of trendsetting every year, trying to define how the future is
going to be. One of the things that I believe we are going to start seeing
in the market is people will start to understand
that the future of design has to do more with
the future of the world, education, and the
way people work than with the future of
design itself."
Baumgartner thinks that outside
factors will be more influential than
industry insiders. For instance,
research that ties a stronger
social network to increased
happiness has inspired
Baumgartner and his team
to create comfortable, open
offices that help employees
make friends.
"You need social environments
where you can relax and talk to other
people-people that probably you
normally don't talk to. You don't have
private offices. You don't even have that many
workstations anymore. It's just about interaction."
As more companies see the benefits of these
innovative interiors, shifts are going to happen at
a breakneck pace, says Baumgartner, founding
partner and managing director of spAce,
a global architecture and design firm in
Mexico City, Mexico. Designers will
need to be primed to respond. "I
believe that our methodologies
and our services have to change
with the same speed that our
clients are changing." -TJ

The Intuitive Workplace

W

hen BEN WATSON, Ind. IIDA,
imagines the office of the future, it's a
place where desk chairs automatically
adjust to every user and conference
rooms alert corporate if teams label them ineffective.
The intuitive workplace is part of Watson's grand vision for
Zeeland, Michigan, USA-based Herman Miller. The iconic furniture manufacturer hired Watson in 2010 to help transform
the company into a lifestyle brand. That involves more than just influencing product design. "It's not about selling someone a
chair-it's about giving them a great place to work."
The Internet of Things will one day enable companies to fully understand how employees inhabit a space and adapt in real
time when it is cold, or dark, or underused, he says. "It's about fine-tuning the environment to the culture and making the
place work for the people. Design isn't fine art. It is about solving problems to serve a greater purpose." -SFG
