Eyes on the Prize
For two weeks every two years, the focus of the entire world
shifts to the Olympic Games. It's an unparalleled opportunity
for the host city to shine on the global stage-and cities are
keen to maximize the impact of that attention. Since 1992,
when the Games helped revitalize a then-struggling
Barcelona, cities have looked to the Olympics as an
opportunity for rejuvenation. They're viewed as a vehicle to
create an infrastructure and landscape that will serve the city
well into the future, increasing tourism and setting the stage
for a new legacy. Compelling and memorable design is one
of the biggest ways a city can make an impression, especially
when the majority of the Olympic audience is watching from
thousands of miles away. In recent years that's led to a kind
of "design arms race" between host cities, as each tries to
create the most iconic, most striking, most memorable new
architecture. But if the Olympics encourage designers to
"make no small plans," they bring with them no small
challenges. From negotiating the disparate desires of multiple
clients, to the call for design that's both iconic and easily
adaptable for future use, working on an Olympic project
is anything but straightforward.
And while broadcasters salivate over dramatic overhead
shots that showcase dramatic and dazzling new buildings,
designing successful interiors for Olympic venues is slightly
more complicated. Sporting venues have to beautifully set
a dramatic mood, but can't upstage the athletic feats or
obstruct a camera's million-dollar live shots. It's a delicate
balancing act.

So how do firms proffer innovative solutions when they're
bound by so many constraints and a process entrenched
in the International Olympic Committee bureaucracy?
Those who've cracked the code say it's less about making a
long term statement, and more about harnessing the power
of ephemeral and functional design.
