Behind the Issue

Each issue of Perspective explores a theme that's pervasive in our industry,
examining it from multiple viewpoints to gain a larger understanding of how
it manifests in design. Recent issues have focused on "Competition," "Influence,"
and "Play," topics germane to design that are also widely relevant to rest of the
world. But perhaps no other theme has felt so urgently tethered to the zeitgeist
as "Politics," which we investigate from a variety of angles in this issue.

Carrie Neill
Perspective Editor in Chief

The word itself solicits a strong reaction: to some it's empowering, to others it
provokes a strong desire to run the other way. But when we sat down this past
winter to begin planning the issue, it was clear from our spirited discourse that
"politics" encapsulates a diverse range of issues and permeates many areas of our
lives. (Just take a look at the "ballot" on the magazine's inside cover.) And there
may be a prevailing sense that society regards politics with a certain amount of
apathy-but what we saw in talking to design professionals for this issue was just
the opposite. Designers are embracing new ways of working that are shifting the
political landscape away from "business as usual," committing to more diversity,
increased transparency and new guidelines that will help the industry stay
accountable to our goals. Both this year's Industry Roundtable report and our
Designer Dialogue on B Corp designations take a close look at the strides
the industry is making in these areas. And in our Roundtable discussion,
we even discuss how engaging in office politics can be a good thing when
it comes to your career.
Business practices aren't alone in benefiting from designers considering the
political upside. The Olympics are routinely one of design's biggest playgrounds,
and as we see in The Politics of Sport, navigating a contract for the Games requires
a new level of diplomacy. In Can Design Rock the Vote?, we highlight how design
thinking is broaching one of its final unexplored frontiers: the electoral process.
It's a move that's desperately needed-think back to the last time you went to
a polling site. "Inspiring" probably isn't the word that comes to mind. But several
design professionals and local governments are working to change that, redesigning
polling places, voting booths, ballots and signage, attempting to revolutionize not
just how we vote but how we feel about it. We end the piece with a call to action,
challenging designers to get involved, connect with their own local governments
and help them leverage the power of design. If there's one takeaway from the
2016 election so far, it's that the status quo is far from a foregone conclusion!
I'd also like to congratulate the entire Perspective team on the recent ASAE 2016
Gold Circle Award, and thank Cheryl Durst and John Rouse for their fearless
leadership at the helm. It is enormously inspiring for us to put together each
issue of this magazine, and as always, we look forward to your feedback!
