GOODBYE,
GYPSUM?

THE PERSONALIZED
WORKSPACE

"Traditional construction
built out of studs and
standard gypsum wall
board is on its way out
because it is inflexible,
costly, and unsustainable.
Technology in the built
environment, from
meeting rooms to [the]
healthcare setting,
continues to change and
old construction methods
cannot keep up with
the pace effectively. Not
only is it disruptive to
end users and owners to
accommodate changes,
it is a big burden to the
landfill and environment."
-Khoo Chialing

"The advent of desk sharing and activitybased work introduced an unprecedented
ability for employees to choose when,
where, and how work happens. Now that
these strategies are more common, we
notice that they often result in impersonal
environments, especially in cases where
there isn't assigned seating. Accordingly,
we see a trend emerging where workers
are in fact encouraged, empowered even,
to make their workplace their own. As
designers, it means embracing a cocreative approach with clients, with a
particular emphasis on implementing
truly flexible furniture solutions and an
employee-led effort to accessorize and
personalize spaces." -Philippe Paré, AIA,
design principal, Gensler, London, England

RECEPTION
REDO
"Traditional reception spaces
are becoming less and less
commonplace. Instead, companies
are making their entry areas
more welcoming by designing
them to be a crossover between
collaborative and reception
spaces. Real estate is valuable,
and the traditional reception area
accommodates very few people
per square foot. Allowing this
space to double as a collaboration
space for employees and a place
to welcome guests is a very
successful way to address this
issue. It also creates a sense of
energy and warmth when a guest
first enters the space."
-Joanna Prazak, IIDA, RID,

Solutions, Houston, Texas, USA

OUT

REZONING EFFORTS
"We've been working on hospitality projects where we've
been asked to build in flexibility in the planning and
utilization of spaces, almost an overlapping of zones in a
way. For example, to deal with a restaurant that is busy for
breakfast and empty for lunch and dinner, we can apportion
part of the seating into the hotel's lobby lounge. The lounge,
then, can act as overflow for the restaurant if needed in the
morning, or expand into the restaurant at night when the
demand swaps." -Teo Su Seam

THE
DEAD DEBATE
"The industry stopped talking
about open versus. cellular over
10 years ago and got started
developing new workplace
models that allow for diverse
work to occur in environments
that are much more than
cubicles and offices. Static
workplaces designed for an
individual based on hierarchy
are most definitely on their way
out." -Sarah Kay
