THE

POP-UP
IS ALL GROWN UP.
Once a guerilla-marketing ploy for the most forward-thinking brands, these here-today-gonetomorrow outlets have become strategic staples for building buzz, connecting with consumers, and
testing out potential new markets.
But, for pop-ups to really pop, interior designers need to create a full-throttle, blow-them-away
affair. "If you want people to come in and shop, you must create an experience, not just a space,"
says Tanya Spaulding, principal, Shea Design, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. "Guests need to be
engaged, and they are not engaged by what is temporary and generic."
When done well, the ROI for pop-ups is there: The Centre for Economics and Business
Research in London, England, for example, estimates pop-ups contributed £2.3 billion to the U.K.
economy in 2015. And according to PopUp Republic, the industry is worth $50 billion in the
United States. With those kinds of numbers, it's no surprise that everyone who's anyone-from
Kanye West and Snapchat to In-N-Out Burger and Marriott-is getting in on the game.

Play Over Pay

IKEA Canada's recent pop-up experience in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, was designed to take shoppers on a
culinary journey-and it started with dessert.

For IKEA Canada's most recent popup, creating a compelling experience
meant transforming a 5,075-square-foot
(471-square-meter) warehouse into a
celebration of kitchens, dining, and food.
The pop-up supported the Scandinavian
company's worldwide "It Starts With Food"
campaign, which was launched to promote
the store's kitchen and dining products.
While this may seem like an easy task for the
home furnishings giant, the team didn't want
to create a carbon copy of its traditional
stores. Instead, they sought to create a space
where people were encouraged to play and
learn-not just purchase.
"We wanted to challenge visitors to
rethink food conventions, break from
tradition, try new things, and start
fooding," says Carmen Ciesielski, interior
design leader, IKEA Canada, Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.
The design for the space included six
rooms that each took the consumer on a
different culinary journey. The first room
shoppers entered had a dessert theme. On
