IN PURSUIT
OF CHANGE

hat if every act of design made a positive impact? As
designers, we can shape the world around us-both literally
and figuratively-by creating a built environment that acts as a
perspective-shifting catalyst and disrupts the status quo.
This is not an opportunity. It is a moral obligation to be part
of the solution to the many global issues we face today-from
climate change to housing insecurity, from food scarcity to political,
cultural, and economic schisms. We cannot passively sit back and
wait for a better future-we must design it now.
In this issue of Perspective, we examine how designers, who have answered this call
to action, are working to heal deep rifts in communities around the world. A Common
Good (page 24) illustrates efforts from Texas to Toronto, Los Angeles to Auckland, to
improve the neighborhood hubs that have the power to bring communities together-to
learn about one another, find common ground, and, at a very basic level, enjoy and unite
in their unique, shared environment. Creating a strong sense of place for all people is a
complicated process that demands inclusivity, but as designers whose depth and breadth
of knowledge includes a commitment to a humanistic approach, we are well-equipped to
take on this challenge.
Another key element to shifting perspectives and embracing our diverse world?
Education. In A New School of Thought (page 38), designers are futureproofing our
institutions of higher learning for the next generation (Gen Z enters college next fall).
Learn how design has shifted to support STEM and STEAM curricula with flexible
learning environments, continued integration of technology, and a new commitment to
much-needed, tech-free spaces amid tightening budgets and aging infrastructure.
Shaping the future requires designers to examine their own values and career
priorities. Balancing Act (page 44) takes on the tricky business of authentically branding
yourself and your work while aligning with your company. Presenting yourself as both an
ambassador of your firm and a genuine person who deeply cares about design can help
ensure that your work has lasting, maximum impact.
And that's only the beginning. Enjoy this thought-provoking issue of Perspective, and
please don't be shy with your thoughts and feedback. We love hearing from you.
Cheers,
