OLD MEETS OPULENT
The Ned-London, England's much-lauded hot hotel opening of 2017-is now
welcoming guests. The uber-resort, from Sydell Group and Soho House & Co., took
up residence in the historic Midland Bank building and opened its doors in May.
British architect Sir Edwin "Ned" Lutyens designed the building in 1924, and
the transformed interiors take advantage of the building's original opulence. In
fact, inspiration for the hotel's design started with the 1920s and 1930s, as well as
transatlantic ocean liners.
"We trawled the bank's archives to find out what the building looked like in
its 1930s heyday," says Adam Greco, a lead interior designer on the project. "We
were inspired by the attention to detail of the great ships of that era, such as the SS
Normandie, as well as the opulence of the Orient Express."
Highlights of the bank's original features include wood-paneled bank teller
cabins that serve as seating in several restaurants, a reception desk turned stage, 92
green verdite columns in the former banking hall, and old safe deposit signage in a
main stairwell, according to The Telegraph.

THE POWER OF PROACTIVE DESIGN
Hospital-acquired conditions
(HACs), such as falls and infections,
can cost patients their lives. But
proactive design can facilitate
preventive care, says Margie Snow,
IIDA, ASID, CHID, EDAC, LEED AP,
principal, Gallun Snow Associates
Inc., Denver, Colorado, USA.
"Healthcare designers can assist
the facility in reducing HACs by
specifying products that can
be cleaned or disinfected with
the standard cleaning agents
used by the staff," Snow says. "It
also helps to shift the curtains
to a system that allows quick

Reducing HACs
by the Numbers
According to the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality,
hospital-acquired conditions
have declined 21 percent from 2010
to 2015. That equates to an estimated:

3.1 million
125,000
$28 billion
fewer incidents

fewer patient deaths

savings in healthcare costs

removal and reinstallation, as this
will encourage more frequent
laundering."
Snow says her teams also
look to eliminate trip hazards-
such as abrupt transitions from
one surface to another-in their
designs. For example, when
transitioning from a resilient
ceramic tile sheet floor product in
a patient room to the bathroom
floor, she uses a metal edge strip
and floats the subfloor up to align
with the ceramic tile height rather
than installing a rubber or solid
surface transition bump.
