■ Muji is simplicity, but simplicity achieved through a
complexity of thought and design
■ Muji's streamlining is the result of the careful
elimination and subtraction of gratuitous features and
design unrelated to function
■ Muji aspires to modesty and plainness
Each room in the Muji hotel is outfitted with the brand's
own goods, including furnishings, bedding, bathrobes, and
toiletries, according to Architectural Digest. The items
are paired with recycled wood flooring and
extracted pillars and walls from traditional
Chinese homes, gray walls, and wood-panel
accents, according to the magazine and
The Spaces.
"By inviting guests to spend the night
with its products, the brand is taking the 'try
before you buy' philosophy to an entirely
new level," Architectural Digest said.

Muji's hotels reflect
the anti-gorgeous,
anti-cheap ethos of
the brand.

Brick and mortar brands looking to capitalize on their
existing consumer base while potentially capturing the
attention of new customers are turning to an alternative
outlet: hospitality.
The movement, which has already been embraced by the
likes of West Elm, Parachute, and Shinola, "promises not
just a way to connect with shoppers and grow loyalty but
could also create an entirely new type of retail flagship," says
Retail Dive.
The latest entrant into this space is popular Japanese
home goods brand Muji, which opened its first hotel in
Shenzhen, China in January.
"Travel has become part of
our daily lives. It has evolved
from the extraordinary to the
ordinary, from something
in which we participate to
something we create," said the
brand in a statement. "Muji
Hotel provides an answer to
this shift in demand."
