Green Grocer Awards 2010 Honoring outstanding sustainability initiatives By Michelle Moran 2010 marks the third year Progressive Grocer has recognized those industry leaders dedicating themselves to social responsibility through green initiatives, with our Green Grocer Awards. It’s such a pleasure reviewing the submissions for this honor that pays tribute to the great strides the grocery industry is making to expand its sustainability portfolios as part of increasingly important corporate social responsibility efforts. In terms of other retail channels, the grocery industry led the LEED construction charge in 2005 with the completion of an 80,000square-foot Giant Eagle supermarket in Cleveland, Ohio. The industry’s commitment continues to flourish and expand, as evidenced by Hannaford’s distinction as the world’s first supermarket chain to open a platinum-certified LEED store in Augusta, Maine, built to the highest standards of the U.S. Green Building Council.
