Passport - (Page P12) Destination Diary Europe Scotland Across the North Sea, Scotland, too, has more than its share of castles dotted across the countryside. In capital city Edinburgh, for example, groups of up to 1,000 can enjoy a medieval banquet at Edinburgh Castle along with private tours of the castle’s highlights like the Scottish crown jewels, the Great Hall, and the Royal Apartments. Or smaller groups can take over a whole castle for their stay, such as Myres Castle which has nine richly appointed guest rooms on 44 acres about midway between Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Within an hour’s drive are 100 golf courses, a common phenomenon in this country where golf was born. A favorite is St. Andrews on the east coast, where groups that plan far in advance can play the famed Old Course. In addition to castles and golf courses, whisky distilleries are the third necessary component of any meeting or convention in Scotland, and these, too, are plentiful and easy to find throughout the countryside. In Edinburgh, the Scotch Whisky Heritage Center provides tours and tastings of a variety of Scotches along with an authentic Scottish banquet to the accompaniment of a piper and dancers. For a more modern flair, Scotland’s largest city Glasgow is a showcase of the Scots-flavored fusion of Modernist and Art Nouveau architecture and design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. On the western seaboard, the city’s modern hotels and eateries provide the backdrop to this edgy and artistic city. One unusual meeting site is House for an Art Lover, designed by Mackintosh and highlighted with some of his signature features like high-backed chairs, “gesso panels” and stained glass windows. 12 Successful Meetings/MeetingNews/Incentive / MARCH 2009 http://www.gotohungary.com http://www.gotohungary.com http://www.hcb.hu
