Passport - (Page P8) Destination Diary Europe Madeira Site Dubrovnik, on the southern tip, is a virtual open-air museum featuring the Franciscan Monastery with Europe’s oldest pharmacy, the Rector’s Palace, and medieval jewels within its limestone brick wall. But it’s also a modern city, with a vibrant arts and café scene and a lively nightlife. Its position on the Adriatic Sea also lends itself to sea-flavored sightseeing and special events like a sunset cruise on a Dalmatian galleon with fine dining and music among the glittering lights of the town Cavtat or a full-day sail among the islands. Don’t forget the oysters, known as some of the world’s best. A number of hotels are suitable for groups, including the Dubrovnik Palace, the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, and the modern Hotel Bellevue. On the northern tip of the country, only two hours from Venice via boat, a five-star Kempinski Hotel is slated to open this winter on a private beach in Instria with a conference center for up to 150. Moving inland, the capital city Zagreb is a mix of rich history with ancient cobblestone streets, majestic ruins, stately architecture, and contemporary culture with an active arts and nightlife scene. In addition to dedicated convention facilities like the Zagreb Fair Convention Center, Hypo Expo XXI, and the Concert and Congress Hall Vatroslav Lisinski, numerous historical sites can be used for special events and receptions, such as the 1895 Croatian National Theater with seating for 800 and receptions for 300, and the Golden Hall of the Croatian Institute of History in the Paravic Palace for a reception for 100. 8 Successful Meetings/MeetingNews/Incentive / MARCH 2009 http://www.croatia.hr/ http://www.croatia.hr/
