PACIFIC NORTHWEST > WILD @ HEART W hat does Seattle do when it needs to find additional exhibition space downtown? Some cities might call in the lawyers and claim eminent domain, hike hotel taxes, and insist on a brand-new, one-level cavern with a million contiguous square feet of expo space. Washington State Convention & Trade Center has instead looked for strategic, logical expansions that keep the center just competitive enough for the larger shows. Last year, the center acquired approximately 50,000 sf of additional meeting and exhibit space with the purchase of the four-story 800 Pike Street building directly across the road. A redesign and renovation project is under way and the new space will be open in 2010. A skywalk already connects the two buildings, and the center is aiming for LEED certifi- cation for environmental sustainability at the conclusion of the project. “They couldn’t build out, so they looked up,” says Heather Bryant, a spokeswoman for Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, which just opened a new visitors center in the upper Pike Street lobby of the center. The visitors center features real-time flight information for SeattleTacoma International Airport and a self-service flight check-in kiosk. The expansion has a decidedly Pacific Northwest feel to it. When life presents one obstacle, can-do Americans in Seattle, Portland, and the surrounding region see multiple paths to victory. The area rewards innovation (think Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and Boeing), and a convention, incentive, or meeting here has access to some of the most innovative properties By Corrie Dosh WILD @ 104 I SM I January 2009 I HEART SEATTLE AND PORTLAND HAVE LONG BEEN GLEAMING BEACONS OF CULTURE AND SOPHISTICATION IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, BUT THESE LIVE-AND-LET-LIVE CITIES DO THINGS THEIR OWN WAY
