graceful French doors. “The Jefferson has been the site of the region’s most prestigious meetings and events throughout its rich history and continues today,” says Rick Butts, director of sales and marketing at the hotel. “Guests treasure the unique contrast of the ornate ballrooms original to the hotel and the state-of-the-art technology available.” Atlanta is the cosmopolitan queen of Southern history, particularly at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. While the building is not a product of the South’s antebellum era, its birth in 1967 was an important event in the nation’s architectural history. The 22-story, 1,260-room property, designed by noted architect John Portman, features several first-of-its-kind innovations, including a central atrium that runs up the center of the property and a revolving restaurant (which closed in 2004). When it was built, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta was the tallest in the city. And while that claim has been taken over by others, the hotel remains a top choice for meeting planners. The property comprises 180,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor event space, including the 29,000-square-foot Centennial Ballroom—the largest ballroom in the city—the 39,000-square-foot Grand Hall, and the 19,700-square-foot Atlanta Conference Center, which itself encompasses nearly 20 meeting rooms. The Regency also is a veritable stone’s throw away from attractions such as the Peachtree Center mall via a covered walkway, the Georgia World Congress Center, the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, the Georgia Dome, and Phillips Arena. Legendary haunts If The Jefferson gets the Southern charm award, Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans surely deserves the “spirit” trophy. And we’re not talking about rah-rah spirit here; the Monteleone is haunted in a serious way. Located at the intersection of Royal and Iberville streets in the French Quarter, the Monteleone offers 20,000 square feet of meeting space, including an amazing 18 ballrooms. The grand, old lady of the collection is the opulent, chandeliered Queen Anne ballroom, which comes in at a regal 3,500 square feet and can accommodate up to 450 attendees.
