REGIS IN BUCKHEAD The Next Big ThingB As you edge toward downtown Atlanta, a horizon-wide display of sky-piercing towers seems to draw you toward it with an almost magnetic energy. Entering the city, cranes create even more skypiercing towers. And you can quickly see that the Atlanta of a few years from now will look much different than the Atlanta of today. The city is already in the convention major leagues, of course, with the headquarters of Fortune 500 companies such as CocaCola, The Home Depot, and Georgia-Pacific, as well as more than 91,000 hotel rooms. But, for the next several years, the number of hotel rooms will increase—hard as it is to believe—almost every month. The same thing is happening all over the South, as well—creating what will be the next chapter in the region’s history. It’s already booming with cosmopolitan cities, history, distinctive cuisine, great attractions and recreation, and innovative new places y Steve Winston Already a world-class meeting destination, the South primes for a dynamic rebirth. to meet. But the South is going to experience even more growth over the next few years, bringing changes that will help produce even more dynamic gatherings. An array of accommodations If Atlanta had a “new hotel” wall-calendar for the next few years, it would be running out of room for new entries. This year, two Hotel Indigo properties are coming, one downtown on Ellis Street, in the historic Carnegie Building, and the other near the airport. Also scheduled are a Palomar Hotel in midtown and a St. Regis in Buckhead. Next year will bring more of the same. Midtown alone is expecting three new properties, from Loews, Mandarin Oriental, and Hilton. And a Hard Rock Hotel, with 270 guest rooms and around-the-clock entertainment, will be the focal point of an innovative mixed-use development near the Georgia Aquarium.
