EDITOR’S LETTER The Authority on Meetings & Incentives The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of here’s this planet, see. It’s billions of miles from Earth. It’s a place where Abraham Lincoln is the President of the world. In his cabinet, FDR is the Secretary of State, George Washington is the Secretary of Defense, Bill Gates is the Secretary of the Treasury, Oprah Winfrey is the Secretary of Education, and Mother Theresa is the Secretary of Health and Human Services. On television, Johnny Carson is the host of The Tonight Show. There are no preliminary rounds on American Idol. The show starts right off with the finalists: Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Jim Morrison, and Aretha Franklin. And apart from Idol, there are no reality shows cluttering the television schedule. The Jersey shore is just another beach. In sports, every city is on a rotation to have Babe Ruth and Nolan Ryan on their baseball team; Michael Jordan, and Wilt Chamberlain on their basketball squad, and Emmitt Smith, and Lawrence Taylor on the gridiron. In fashion, Christian Dior, Diane von Furstenberg, Giorgio Armani, and Hugo Boss are all sold at rock-bottom prices in every Walmart, Target, and Kmart. And Wolfgang Puck and Bobby Flay have restaurants everywhere (wait a minute—that one actually exists on this planet). But that’s kind of what we’re all about in this world. We’re allowed glimpses of perfection, but never the whole picture. Our greatness is destined to be inextricably bound with our stupidity. It’s why our genius can put the entire Internet in the palms of our hands, while at the same time turn our banking system into a giant casino that wipes out entire industries and throws millions of workers into chaos. I don’t know what the answer to it all is—in truth nobody does. The best we can hope for in this world is to find pieces of the answer here and there. The subject of our cover story is someone who has a piece, and it’s a pretty big one. Jonathan Tisch, chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels, has a new book coming out in May. In Citizen You, Tisch proposes a new activism in which ordinary individuals become willing to take on global challenges. When you think about it, that makes a whole lot more sense than my dream of a world in a galaxy far, far away.
