This year marks dual 400th anniversaries of the birth of the state and of Captain Henry Hudson’s voyage up the river that now bears his name. It also happens to be the 200th anniversary of the first successful steamboat trip ever, up the Hudson and piloted by Robert Fulton. And it has been 400 years since Frenchman Samuel de Champlain discovered a picturesque lake near what is now the Canadian border, and promptly named it after himself. What better way to celebrate than to plan a group expedition to the state? A year of celebrations include the open- N ing of the Walkway Over the Hudson, a 6,767-ft new “park in the sky” in Poughkeepsie; and the reopening of the restored Crown Point Lighthouse on Lake Champlain. In June, West Point will celebrate the Quadricentennial, and many other New York colleges, museums, and cultural institutions have planned festivities, according to the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial Office. New Developments Lake George is benefiting from new state and federal funding to develop its local attractions. The area received $2.5 million in funding under the federal stimulus package to develop the West Brook Conservation Initiative. A new public park with nature and fitness trails is planned, and a new aquarium rivaling the New England Aquarium in Boston is planned for the area in 2012. Pinnacle winner The Sagamore, with 350 rooms in Bolton Landing, is a standout for meetings and events in the area. The property offers 26,000 sf of event space in total, as well as a Donald Ross championship golf course, sailing school, and spa. The historic property was sold last summer to Delray Beach, FL-based Ocean Properties, prompting about 200 temporary layoffs.
