S M: What one environmental initiative at the Fairmont are you most proud of? SANTOS: I am extremely proud of Fairmont Mayakoba’s work with the World Heritage Alliance (WHA). Through this organization, which promotes responsible tourism in World Heritage Sites, we have established close relationships with Mayan communities in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere’s surroundings and with NGOs (non-governmental organizations) committed to conservation and sustainable tourism projects. The relationship with the WHA has allowed the hotel to support the economic development of these Mayan communities through activities focused on the responsible use and conservation of natural resources. Additionally, this relationship allows Fairmont Mayakoba to assure its guests that their stay at the hotel also helps support the local community. Working with the communities, for their professional and economical development through sustainable tourism, is without a doubt immensely gratifying. —Kinley Levack In addition to measures taken in the maintenance and irrigation systems of El Camaleon, the golf carts’ GPS systems ensure players do not drive into highlyprotected vegetated areas.
