Trade Show Report Goodbye, Booth Babes Shows ditch glitz for more business-like approach By Ben Chapman Paris Hilton’s no longer on speeddial for the organizers of E3/Electronic Entertainment Expo, the video game industry’s largest event and one of the biggest conventions in the world. They won’t be calling Snoop Dogg any time soon either. That’s because this year’s show, renamed the E3 Media & Business Summit, featured a newly conservative theme, far fewer companies and a severely shrunken show floor. Drastically downsizing the gaming industry’s biggest convention was a controversial move by show owners the Entertainment Software Association, and one that’s earned mixed reviews from exhibitors and attendees. But it’s an inevitable reaction, many say, to an environment that’s placing more importance on returns and favors substance over style and measurable gains over empty glitz. CHAOS CONVENTION Over the years, E3 had gotten out of hand, says San Diegobased trade show consultant Candy Adams, who exhibited at the event for two years. It had gotten too big for its own good.
