Lanai and Molokai MAUNA LOA Old-Style Relaxation O nly nine miles from Maui, Lanai is a whole different world, aptly nicknamed “Hawaii’s most enticing island.” In the Know: Lanai and Molokai LANAI CITY HULOOE BAY “Lanai allows attendees to become like a sponge and soak up everything during a meeting,” says Terryl Vencl, executive director of the Maui Visitors Bureau, which also encompasses the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. “It allows attendees to leave all their troubles behind, relax, and really take in whatever the meeting folks what them to absorb. I’ve seen it time and again—attendees become so relaxed that they enter a different state where they can really process the meeting content.” Attendees won’t find a single traffic light on the island or any of the bustling fun-seeking of some of the larger islands. But what they will find is two world-class resorts in dramatically different settings. The 236-unit Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay is an oceanside playground perched atop a red-lava cliff. In the dramatic highlands, the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, the Lodge at Koele simulates a gracious country manor with 102 guest rooms and suites, indoor meeting space for 100, and multiple outdoor sites, spa services, and the Experience at Koele golf course designed by Greg Norman. The island’s only community is the quaint plantation town of Lanai City, a remnant of the island’s days as a pineapple plantation. The rustic Monroe Trail is a seven-mile, one-lane dirt road offering spectacular views of canyons and Maui. Over on Molokai, which groups can reach via ferry from Maui, attendees travel back to a Hawaii of old. “The Hawaiian • Adventuresome groups can visit Kalaupapa on Molokai, where the Belgian missionary Father Damien set up a refuge for those with leprosy— it’s a three-mile mule ride to the site • Lanai’s Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo) is an otherworldly rock garden with an eerie Mars-like topography and stacks of mysterious rock towers, spires, and rock formations resulting from centuries of erosion culture surrounds you in Molokai,” says Vencl. Time slows down as groups check out one of the state’s longest white-sand beaches at Papohaku, ancient fishponds, and the largest sea cliffs in the world. With the closing of the unique Lodge and Beach Village at Molokai Ranch in March 2008, the only remaining hotel at press time is the beachside Hotel Molokai with one meeting room for up to 250. ■ 12 DECEMBER 2008 SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS http://www.weildmc.com http://www.weildmc.com
