But while you may think you’re doing your four-legged friend a favor, there are important considerations that must be addressed before hitting the road or taking to the skies with your pet. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, planning and preparation will make the trip pleasant both for you and the animal. Before any trip, visit your veterinarian to make sure that all required vaccinations are up-to-date, and ask for a health certificate within 10 days of travel. Make sure the pet has a sturdy collar with two forms of identification—its permanent address and its local address. Grooming before a trip, along with making sure its favorite food,toys and dishes are available,will make the pet more comfortable. Having a photo of your pet in case it gets lost is a good idea, as is a first aid kit for minor emergencies. Make sure the hotel you’re staying at allows pets and is petfriendly. WHEN TRAVELING BY AIR Check with the airline well in advance for its particular rules and regulations concerning pet travel.Most airlines require a health certificate issued within 10 days prior to travel. Most major airlines allow cats and small dogs to travel in specially designed carriers that fit under the seat. Federal regulations require that pets be at least eight weeks old and weaned at least five days prior to flying. Whenever possible, book a nonstop flight. During warm weather, choose early morning or late evening flights. In colder months, choose midday flights. The Federal Animal Welfare Act prohibits airlines from accepting dogs and cats for shipment if the airline cannot prevent exposure of the animal to extreme temperatures—less than 45 degrees or more than 85 degrees for more than 45 minutes—when the animal is transferred between the terminal and plane,or for more than four hours when the animal is in a holding facility. Also keep in mind, short-nosed dogs may have more difficulty with air travel. Lastly, defective shipping kennels are the most common cause of escaped or injured animals during air travel. Make sure yours is sturdy,and take time to get your pet accustomed to it before the trip. —Maureen Hrehocik NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2007 SALES&MARKETING MANAGEMENT OTHER TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND: WHEN TRAVELING BY CAR Make sure cats are in a carrier to allow them to feel secure, as well as to keep them from getting under your feet while driving. If your car has an airbag, dogs should not ride in the front passenger seat or sit in your lap. Harnesses, pet tethers and other accessories are available at pet stores to ensure your pet’s safety while in the car. Don’t let your dog hang its head out the window. Dirt particles and other debris can get in its eyes, ears and nose. Stick to your regular feeding routine and give the main meal at the end of the day. Take along a jug of cold water or ice cubes. Stopping every two hours for a little exercise will be good for you and the pet. Don’t forget to pack a leash.
