Training Magazine - June 2008 - (Page 11) Partnerships&Alliances Mismanaged Mobility are great at first—productivity without the overhead of additional office space. But as good as these programs look on paper, executives are skeptical about their effectiveness, according to a recent survey from the Human Capital service area of Deloitte Consulting LLP. Forty-three percent of respondents say they view global mobility as a key business competency, but only 10 percent believe their companies are treating it as such. “Clearly, there is a lack of confidence in global mobility programs, and we believe that’s attributable to a disconnect among management about global mobility,” says Robin Lissak, principal in Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Human Capital service area and director of the survey. “This puts companies at serious risk because global expansion and operational efficiency have become increasingly pivotal factors in corporate competitiveness and growth.” Global mobility done right, according to respondents, means aligning with the business to proactively anticipate and fulfill talent needs, effectively select GLOBAL MOBILITY PROGRAMS assignment candidates, and maintain legal and regulatory compliance. But more than 60 percent of survey respondents report their global mobility programs are poorly aligned with these priorities. Fewer than half (43 percent) rate their companies’ ability to anticipate global mobility needs so appropriate policies, programs, and processes could be put in place to meet those needs as “very” or “moderately strong.” Mobility “is a strategic talent and business issue,” says Gardiner Hempel, a partner in Deloitte Tax LLP’s Global Employer Services service line, “that should be approached with the same level of attention, focus, and commitment in today’s management meetings and boardrooms as other key business competencies.” >> Nokia Siemens Networks, a network communications company with 60,000 employees, implemented the SuccessFactors Performance and Talent Management suite to drive consistency across its global operations. The company, the result of a merger between the network communications divisions of Nokia and Siemens, sought technology help to unite employees of the newly formed company, and called on SuccessFactors to build a common culture and operating model for its high-performing employees. >> NetSpeed Learning Solutions was awarded a five-year contract to provide a series of workshops on various Leadership and Organizational Development topics to the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO). The contract, involving its NetSpeed Leadership program, also includes the training of internal trainers within GAO. >> iLinc Communications, Inc., a provider of Web conferencing software and audio conferencing services, entered into a partner agreement with Evolment Soluciones Tecnologicas S.L., a Barcelona-based technology software and services provider, that will enable Evolment to sell iLinc’s suite of Web conferencing products to potential clients in Western Europe. >> Safari Books Online, a provider of digital libraries, announced an agreement with Packt Publishing to make Packt’s books and other technical publications available online to corporate and individual library subscribers. Safari Books Online will upload 20 Packt eBooks initially, and eventually plans to include all Packt titles within its digital libraries. training JUNE 2008 How important is retention? 81% of executives consider employee retention an important business priority, a jump from the 41% in 2007 who considered employee retention a top priority.
