As part of the Systems Support Group, the labs offer combined capabilities in disciplines such as materials and process engineering, advanced technologies and quality control. The labs support nearly all company sectors, with a heavy emphasis on work with both new and aging structures (aircraft, ships, advanced structural components, and equipment). Commercial customers include the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Boeing, Vought and Sikorsky. Over the past several years, the labs performed extremely well on numerous A-10 test tasks, primarily in the areas of coupon fabrication and spectrum crack growth testing, structural component failure investigations and airframe teardown inspections, said Ken Grube, A-10 program engineering manager. “The work has consistently been on or ahead of schedule, within budget and always accomplished to the highest levels of technical excellence. In particular, the Air Force has gained high confidence in Northrop Grumman’s performance on successive teardown inspections as a result of the professional methods used and quality of results achieved.” Functional areas of lab support are: full-scale aircraft structure teardown analysis; comprehensive failure/forensic analysis; measurement standards engineering; field support of Northrop Grumman products worldwide; special process auditing (heat treatment, finishing, bonding, welding, nondestructive testing); environmental analysis; and waste/effluent analysis, among other core services. The labs boast international, national and state accreditations. Kim Campbell, pilot of A-10 aircraft S/N 81-0987, visits Bethpage for a first-hand look at how her aircraft will be inspected by Northrop Grumman TS. The aircraft was battle-damaged in operations over Baghdad in 2004. 2 A-10 fuselage S/N 81-0987 arrives in Bethpage in November 2004 for teardown inspection as part of ongoing Aircraft Structural Integrity Program support provided by the Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems and Technical Services sectors.
