A lead power coordinator working with high-voltage distribution systems, Lawrence has been improving his professional knowledge by pursuing a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Central Florida while working full-time at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS). Lawrence’s technical design contributions at work recently led to the development of a sophisticated mimic board that’s used to map the high-voltage power distribution system for CCAFS, increasing system effectiveness and response to anomalies. He also oversaw the installation and testing of a Supervisory Contol and Data Acquisition system that monitors remote substation performance. Both of these improvements resulted in an increase in customer confidence and enhanced ability for the SGS team to troubleshoot site power system issues. S Jon Lawrence takes a break from his work inside a power distribution area at Cape Canaveral. Among his responsibilities, Lawrence analyzes data and prepares weekly presentations that are distributed to the customer on global email and through status reviews conducted by the 45th Space Wing commander. TS Fort Leavenworth Team Members Help Prepare Local Youth for Robotics Competition ince 2005, Technical Services team members at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., have been giving back to the community in a big way, mentoring youth from Kansas High School in nearby Piper and helping prepare students there for an international robotics competition organized by FIRST (http://www.usfirst.org/), which stands for Foundation for the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The TS-assisted team has fared well in both years of competition; this year, the team placed first in the Kansas City regional competition and is currently preparing for nationals in Atlanta. The competition receives more than 10,000 entries annually from worldwide participants. TS volunteers spend, on average, a few hours daily for six weeks assisting with the robot’s construction. In addition to mentoring and providing technical expertise, TS team members help with fundraising. This year, Mike Kain, TS program manager for Battle Command Training Program, spearheaded an effort to secure Northrop Grumman sponsorship. “The great thing besides the concept has been the continuous and steady participation of these students and mentors!” said Roger Logan, a TS systems administrator at Fort Leavenworth involved with the project. “The participation level and the enthusiasm of the whole team has been remarkably high, always!” Contestants are given six weeks to design, build and test the robots. Robots are then packed up and shipped to the regional competition site where they are placed on a tarmac and given the green light to rumble. This year’s robot is named Stealth (chosen by the students) and features a likeliness of a B-2 Bomber.
