Technical Services - Spring 2008 - (Page 22) TS Team Members Sharpen Skills Through Advanced Training and CareerBroadening Opportunities T echnical Services employees are continually striving to realize their fullest potential as individuals and as members of Team Technical Services. To help facilitate employee growth, Technical Services offers numerous career and professional development opportunities, including the Training Tool Box, Leadership from the Core and other instructor-led courses. These training programs provide employees with skills and tools needed not only to realize their fullest potential, but to help the Technical Services team in Driving To Be The Best In The World At What We Do. The Human Resources organization created the Training Tool Box, which consists of more than 100 individual courses that are divided into Green, Blue, Red and Gold curriculums, to provide for employee growth. These computer-based training classes are designed for all employees and range from general knowledge and management curriculum to specialty classes such as Microsoft certification courses. According to Ruth Carstens, Learning and Development manager, the Red, Blue and Green curriculums contain classes created by SkillSoft, a leading provider of e-learning content. The Gold curriculum contains leadership development courses created by Technical Services and is designed for use by all employees. The Gold curriculum of the Training Tool Box is accessible from the Learning Resource Center on the intranet; in addition, CDs containing the entire Tool Box are available at many of the Technical Services sites. Sevinc Bailey of Human Resources gives a presentation during a recent Leadership from the Core training class. Facilitated by James Cameron, president, Northrop Grumman Technical Services, each session consists of group presentations on a pre-selected leadership attribute, along with business group and functional area briefings, followed by class discussion. The program is hosted yearly at different TS locations around the country. Management nominates candidates from a diverse array of employees, possessing a wide range of skills and experience, ranging from junior-level employees to seniorlevel executives. In addition to this valuable leadership development program, TS recently launched the TS Program Managers course, an instructor-led class for new program managers with less than two years of experience. The four-day course, designed and taught by subject matter experts, provides employees with critical core knowledge and skills that are essential to successfully managing programs within Technical Services. Another sector training project includes new curriculum in Capture & Proposal Management. This training instructs students how to execute business development processes effectively. It consists of more than 60 classes focused on the activities of a successful pursuit. Business Development sponsors the program, which is taught by experts across the corporation. In addition to TS-centric leadership courses, managers with less than two years’ experience may be nominated to attend LEAD1NG for Front-Line Leaders, Northrop Grumman’s enterprise-wide training program for new supervisors. The course was designed using Northrop Grumman’s Leadership Competency model. Taught by Northrop Grumman facilitators and subject matter experts, supervisors learn the competencies and behaviors expected of all leaders in the company and how they can enhance their own skills against the model. TS is continually evaluating and creating new learning opportunities for employees. TS Leadership from the Core participants engage in a class discussion. Technical Services believes it’s important to prepare employees for leadership positions at all levels. The sector’s Leadership from the Core program provides full-spectrum leadership instruction that equips students for current and future growth opportunities within the company. It’s an eight-month course that combines formal classroom training, group projects and real-world experience. 22 Technical Services Magazine • Spring 2008 http://sitg2.ms.northgrum.com/lrc/ http://sitg2.ms.northgrum.com/lrc/
