Primarily home to the Hunter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Sierra Vista is TS’ Center of Excellence for UAV product support, including support to the Global Hawk and Fire Scout. TS’ Sierra Vista facilities include more than 115,000 square feet under roof on 20 acres of land, providing ample room for expansion. The site also supports flight operations at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz., and Libby Army Airfield on Fort Huachuca, where maintenance test flights, payload integration flights, engineering test flights and system capability demonstrations are performed. “From Sierra Vista, we provide world-class unmanned air vehicle support to several Northrop Grumman-built platforms that are in service with U.S. warfighters across the world,” said Jim Perry, TS director and Sierra Vista site manager. “That support includes maintenance and field logistics, as well as mission planning and training, sensor and other electronics support.” For the Hunter program, Sierra Vista is fielding a new Hunter MQ-5B aircraft, which replaces the Hunter RQ-5A. This new system features all new avionics, heavy fuel engines and wet extended center wings with hard points for deploying weapons, such as Northrop Grumman’s Viper Strike munition. These new aircraft are being fielded with new One System Ground Stations, capable of flying a variety of unmanned platforms. Hunter is currently serving as the “eyes” of U.S. Army warfighters serving in Iraq. TS maintains a field support team providing logistics support to Hunter in theater. One TS team member providing logistics support in Iraq is Carol Harshbarger, a 14-year employee who is on her third deployment in support of Army operations. “This has been an incredible experience and opportunity for me,” she said. “It’s been awesome to watch the Hunter system perform the task it was designed for and to be part of a team of some of the hardest working and knowledgeable people around.” Harshbarger noted TS’ Depot personnel have been instrumental in providing support to Hunter’s mission in Iraq. “Collaboration and teamwork have been the keys to a successful support contract,” she added. N ear the southeastern corner of Arizona, south of Tucson and surrounded by desert mountains near the San Pedro River, the Technical Services Sierra Vista site occupies a sizable portion of the rocky land- 1 4 Technical Services Magazine • Spring 2008
