Recent training accomplishments include conducting Command Staff Operations Skills (CSOS) training for several host nations and their battalion staffs. ACOTA training typically includes a Command Post Exercise (CPX) designed to provide battalion staff the opportunity to apply lessons learned from the CSOS and create an operations order. Also during the first two quarters of 2008, TS trainers conducted several iterations of Computer-Assisted Exercises for host nations. CPX scenarios apply time, distance and logistics factors into training using real-world peace support operations, such as the United Nations mission in Darfur, Sudan. TS ACOTA trainers also performed pre-deployment Soldier Skills Training (SST) in four African nations. SST provides a host nation’s battalion soldiers with enhanced field skills. The training includes weapons handling and live-fire marksmanship, basic first aid and an orientation on the area of operations where the forces are preparing to deploy. Recently added to the ACOTA training sequence is the Non-commissioned Officer and Company Grade Officer leadership course. TS trainers designed it to further develop basic leadership skills required for a military peace operations unit. Instruction is in a classroom environment, and the lessons are incorporated into the Northrop Grummandeveloped computer-based tool named Peacekeeper. TS instructors also recently conducted mechanized operations training as a result of a United Nations’ decision to increase defense capabilities of African units being sent to the Darfur region.
