But a side-benefit of having years of experience is they can also agilely turn on a dime and adapt to unexpected situations. The past seven months, they did just that, taking in E-8C aircraft 0201 for “drop-in” maintenance (DIM). The aircraft needed significant structural repairs to the left and right wings. In October, aircraft 0201 was brought into the Lake Charles Maintenance and Modification Center’s (LCMMC) Hangar A for final testing. “The quality and speed of the repair work is proof of the skill and dedication of the employees at the Lake Charles site,” said David Tracy, director and site manager. “Employees have forgone vacations and worked significant overtime to ensure that this aircraft is returned to the warfighter on schedule. It’s been a tremendous effort for everyone involved.” The repairs involved replacement of three forward spar webs on the two wings. Developing a repair plan and integrating this statement of work into ongoing post depot maintenance (PDM) efforts was challenging but the Lake Charles team leveraged their experience in maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO). Team members contributed innovative ideas to check and refine repair plans as the work progressed. With the addition of DIM work in 2008, Lake Charles has continued to produce E-8C PDM aircraft, on time, on or below budget, and with excellent quality. The DIM project is currently ahead of schedule, below cost estimates, and the quality of work is excellent. The team is now focused on completing the aircraft and delivering it to the Air Force customer at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., in November. The Lake Charles team continues to provide our customers with world-class MRO support and unscheduled maintenance for the E-8C fleet.
