Technical Services - Winter 2009 - (Page 21) training and simuLation t&s Technical Services supports joint training media operations echnical Services, in support of the Joint Warfighting Center (JWFC) in Suffolk, Va., provides realistic training to support U.S. military commanders and combined training events, mission rehearsal exercises in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Horn of Africa, and senior military leadership joint operations modules. This support provides the foundation for success in real-world operations. Most recently, JWFC played a pivotal role in a series of training events to assist in the establishment of the newly formed United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) in Stuttgart, Germany. During joint and combined exercises, TS, along with other team members, provided exercise control support, scenario and training audience stimulus development and management, media products, models and simulations, and critical role players. A Joint Support Team of media production personnel from World News Network (WNN), with core leadership from TS, also provides realism to the exercise programs. TS team members Steve Kearns and Richard St. Peter plan, direct, and write media events. They also provide technical support for interviews, press conferences and Web sites designed to distribute news products, and produce, direct, tape and edit simulated news broadcast and training videos. TS media trainers recently assisted Gen. Ward of USAFRICOM in preparing to address the international media regarding their establishment as a Unified Command. The JWFC improves readiness by providing worldwide training and training support, assisting in the preparation of integrated and interoperable forces, providing management and integration of models and simulations, and serving in a leadership capacity in the development of joint doctrine and joint training initiatives. TF KOA mobilized from Hawaii several months ago and conducted their pre-deployment training at Fort Hood. TF KOA has been employed as the theater security force upon deployment to Iraq since the end of October. A portion of TF KOA’s pre-deployment capstone training was to put as many crews as possible through the Warrior Skills Trainer, a simulation-driven virtual convoy trainer which is a key component of Fort Hood’s Battle Command Training Center (BCTC), managed by Technical Services. In the Warrior Skills Trainer, crews of up to four vehicle convoys can practice their tactics, techniques, and procedures in virtual scenarios modeled to resemble the live situations the crews will face during their deployment. This training is an excellent opportunity for leaders and crews to practice individual and collective skills, work out procedures and form their team in preparation for combat. The Fort Hood Warrior Skills Trainer has supported the virtual training of more than 40,000 soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen since its inception in 2003. In 2008 the facility has put a monthly average of 891 soldiers through its simulations. TS T 1 2 1 The lead vehicle of the convoy passes a checkpoint somewhere in virtual Iraq.
