Technical Services - Winter 2009 - (Page 4) ss systems support TS implements improvements to U.S. Postal Service equipment N orthrop Grumman Technical Services (NGTS) employees have completed the installation of the USPS Flats Sequencing System (FSS) First Article machine at the General Mail Facility in Dulles, Va. The First Article machine is based on a pre-production design that was installed at the Dulles facility in 2007 and is still in operation. 1 “Based on the FSS pre-production system, numerous improvements were incorporated into the Production First Article machine to increase performance and reliability and to facilitate installation,” said Greg Woycio, NGTS deployment program manager for the contract. The FSS system will save the USPS billions of dollars by reducing labor-intensive activities. Presently, flats mail is sent to the local post office sorted only by zip code. The local mail carriers for each of these post offices must then pull their mail from the pile and sort it to their carrier route or sequence it. Now the FSS system will sort the mail for each mail carrier and sequence it to their route. Sequenced mail is automatically placed into a tray that the mail carrier transfers either to their vehicle or bag. USPS awarded Northrop Grumman the $876 million firmfixed-price contract in 2007 to install a total of 106 Flats Sequencing Systems. NGTS is responsible for installing these FSS machines in 32 USPS facilities across the nation, including a USPS training facility in Norman, Okla. Once installation efficiencies have been achieved, each machine installation will require seven weeks and involve fourteen NGTS personnel and subcontractors. If the USPS realizes the cost savings planned from this first buy, they are considering purchasing up to an additional 175 machines.
