Technical Services - Winter 2009 - (Page 6) ss systems support Livermore operations provide major support to NSTec joint venture by Jan Bisterfeldt ver the past year the Livermore Operations (LO) team has participated in numerous high-tech experimental projects involving OMEGA, a high-power laser facility at the University of Rochester in New York. LO is part of National Security Technologies LLC (NSTec). This unit is a joint venture led by Northrop Grumman Technical Services that manages the Nevada Test Site and satellite offices. “Our scientists, engineers and technicians have supported many technically complex experiments,” said Zaheer Ali, an LO scientist/physicist, who is part of the primary fourperson team composed of Ali, James Tellinghuisen, Kevin Loughman and Kathy Garcia. These experiments include verifying magneto hydrodynamic code, developing Inertial Confinement Fusion targets, investigating material properties at extreme energy densities and helping to develop, implement and operate diagnostics for high-energy density science. Recently, NSTec supported the commissioning of the new OMEGA Extended Performance (EP) laser system, which is designed to integrate emerging high-energy short-pulse laser technology with existing long-pulse technology. NSTec scientists and technicians have also been involved with the new neutron, hard X-ray and Electro-Magnetic Pulse diagnostics fielded on OMEGA EP Additionally, . NSTec engineers calibrate and support mission critical diagnostics on OMEGA such as the X-ray spectrometers, DANTE, HENWAY, as well as X-ray framing cameras, and streak camera systems. TS The second set of beam-delivery optics to the OMEGA EP target chamber was aligned and initial target shots were taken during the week of June 30. The OMEGA EP target chamber is shown illuminated by green light when high-intensity infrared laser hit the target.
