The Earle mission, launched from Wallops Flight Facility, investigated mid-latitude ionospheric irregularities. EUNIS launched from White Sands Missile Range, N.M. to study the physical properties of solar corona; and the Kletzing mission explored the phenomenon of magnetic reconnection by making high-resolution measurements in a near-Earth space plasma environment. Kletzing carried NSROC’s Magnetic ACS (Attitude Control System) and was one of many NSROC accomplishments that led to receipt of the Kreiger Award. Douglas Rowland, Senior Engineer for Goddard Space Flight Center, praised NSROC for December’s Kletzing mission. “The NSROC payload team and the NASA Sounding Rocket Project Office did a fantastic job with building the payloads, getting them here, and handling the logistics and support for this highly complex mission,” he said. 1 For significant contributions in the development of new attitude control systems, saving the NASA customer millions of dollars and improving system accuracies to enable more science, NSROC, in partnership with White Sands Missile Range employees, were awarded the Robert L. Kreiger Award, presented annually to an individual or group who “best represent the Wallops culture.” The NSROC ACS (Attitude Control Systems) groups from Wallops Flight Facility and White Sands Missile Range were presented the Robert L. Kreiger award at the annual NASA Wallops Awards Ceremony. The ACS team consisted of: Walt Costello, Denise Crippen, Brian Tibbetts, Jeffrey Benton, Charles Kupelian, John Ozanne, Ron Kiefer, Valerie Gsell, Dave Jennings, Neil Shoemaker, Gerry Doyon, Pat McPhail, Dave Lang, Becky Grzelachowski, Carlos Martinez, Jesus Martinez, Chris Hoxworth, Paul Harmon, Stephen Bower, Terri Snyder, Kenneth Starr and Dennis Melvin.
