It also reinforces positive mindsets and leads to greater levels of innovation and improvement. At Technical Services’ Lake Charles Maintenance and Modification Center (LCMMC) in Louisiana, employees have been excelling and setting new plateaus for achievement year after year. This past January, the site celebrated 15 years of collective accomplishments, welcoming local, state and federal legislators for a VIP Day to observe ongoing progress and efforts to expand Lake Charles’ capacity for other work. The VIP Day was organized by Louisiana State Senator Willie Mount and co-hosted with U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany of the state’s 7th Congressional District. During morning briefings with elected officials, site leadership announced the recent delivery of a housing unit for a Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) radar, which is being produced for the Turkish Air Force; Northrop Grumman’s Electronic Systems is the lead sector for the effort. “MESA marks our first entry into an all new product line,” said Site Manager David Tracy. “Over the years, we’ve built this site into a high-performing operation and developed tremendous in-house capabilities. Our employees are continually improving how we do things and always returning products to our customers on time and at or under budget. In MESA, we’re bringing our design, modification and metal fabrication skills to a new customer. We went from proposing how we could achieve this to actually accomplishing it in a small window of time.” E The site continues to perform world-class periodic depot maintenance and upgrade work for the Air Force on the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) program. Customer performance ratings are consistently at the highest levels. With a workforce that averages 20 years of production experience and 35 percent of team members certified to perform the full range of manufacturing processes, the LCMMC is positioned to handle major repairs and overhaul of any airframe in service. Site operations include a hangar with 216,920 square feet of floor space, along with an 80,000-square-foot back-shop facility where skilled machinists manufacture specialized parts. They also have a strong partnership with nearby Chennault International Airport, which maintains other facilities and hangars adjacent to the LCMMC that are available for leasing. “The state of Louisiana has been very supportive of Northrop Grumman and our Lake Charles operation,” said Dave Werkheiser, TS vice president and general manager of the Life Cycle Optimization and Engineering Group. “We’ve demonstrated through our commitment to superior performance and excellence that we’re the best choice for aircraft refurbishment and modification services. Our record is one of achieving greater levels of efficiency. With a high-demand asset such as Joint STARS, it’s been important for the Air Force customer to have a partner that’s reliable, one who understands mission requirements and is always looking to deliver a better product. Our goal is to turn this center of excellence for heavy-wing aircraft into an even greater resource for our nation and valued customers.” TS 1 1 2 TS team members (l-r) Jeff Perry, Mary White and Calvin Ledoux put the finishing touches on a fabricated panel. 2 3 3 Lake Charles team member John Harris customizes a new aircraft part.
