These highly skilled mechanics had been assigned previously to a support assignment at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego County. The support team was wholly self-sufficient during the entire deployment, meaning that all parts, tools, tooling, support equipment, dry goods and controlled materials had to be identified, acquired, loaded and shipped to arrive prior to the team’s arrival in the country, all in accordance with stringent International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Working 10 hours or more a day in tropical conditions, just 400 miles north of the equator, the team successfully met every challenge—cultural and technical. “They accomplished their mission for the Malaysian aircraft, earning the admiration of their customers, the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s 18 Squadron personnel,” said Hugh Speed of the F/A-18 Fleet Support Team. The team members developed a keen rapport with their Malaysian counterparts during their stay, which significantly reduced administrative and technical obstructions. They built deep mutual respect and trust with their RMAF counterparts based on their consistently high level of expertise and professionalism. In the end, the team earned praise from RMAF commanders, as well as Integrated Systems and Technical Services management for a job well done, meeting all schedule and cost parameters established.
