What don’t you want your wife to hear?” Ralph pointed to the Roast Beef Roundup on the menu, and the waitress smiled and wrote it on her order pad before turning to Bill, who waved her away. “Well, you know that Edna’s Tupperware® business has slowed considerably in this economy.” Bill waited for Ralph’s nod to make sure he had his friend’s attention. “She’s decided to become a signing agent.” Ralph shrugged. “She’s already a notary, so that’s a logical choice. Is there a problem?” It was Bill’s turn to shrug. “Maybe. In the last year or so, Edna has—ah— been forgetting a lot. She leaves her gloves at stores all over town, and she forgot to pick up the dog until the groomer finally called. Once she even forgot my dinner.” Bill frowned at Ralph’s laugh. “Those may seem minor to you, but I’m worried about the liability if she forgets to get a signature on some loan papers or she doesn’t calculate a rescission date right. What if I find a loan package in the trunk of the car because she forgot to drop it off at the express office?” “It sounds like you’ve done your research, pal,” Ralph told his friend as the waitress set his Roast Beef Roundup before him, “and you’re right to be concerned. Handling other people’s financial documents is important business. Lucky for Edna there is Signing Agent Errors and Omissions Insurance.” The look of relief on Bill’s face was almost comical. “How does Signing Agent E&O work?” “In any of the situations you described, the borrowers could fail to get their loan. Maybe the next time they apply, the rate has gone up. Maybe they lose an opportunity to purchase some prime property at a good price. Then they decide to sue Edna for their financial loss. Signing Agent E&O protects Edna in situations like that.” “But what about the Notary E&O we got for her?” Bill watched distractedly as Ralph took in a forkful of gravysmothered roast beef. “Wouldn’t Notary E&O cover her?” Ralph shook his head. “Notary E&O comes into play only for notary errors, not for signing agent errors. As you know, signing agent duties are not covered by the Pennsylvania Notary Public Law. It’s important to understand the difference, and it’s important to have coverage for both.” Bill perked up and suddenly took an interest in Ralph’s Roast Beef Roundup, nudging a french fry out from the pile. Ralph moved his plate out of Bill’s reach. “I’m glad Edna is a PAN member,” he said. “PAN just worked out a deal with a major insurance company to provide the first Signing Agent E&O policy to be offered by any association anywhere in this country. You can always count on PAN to help you out.” “Looks like Edna’s signing agent business is a go,” Bill replied, signaling for the waitress. “Let’s just hope her memory can keep up!” PAN is pleased to offer Signing Agent Errors & Omissions Insurance at great rates for PAN members.
