Notary Notes Magazine - DEMO - (Page 15) NOTARY NOTES the LECTRONIC Notary $24.95. You will also need a computer and high-speed Internet access is also required to become an eNotary. While this cost is minimal, if you’re not performing eNotarizations then the product is not paying for itself. Across the country, several other states have developed electronic notarization programs and others are studying the technology with an eye to developing programs of their own. Ten years ago, people were watching VHS tapes and listening to cassette tapes. A decade later, both items have a place in a museum. Technology changes rapidly and the eNotary world of next month, next year or 10 years from now could be dramatically different from the technology being used today. So, some knowledge of technology is always going to be required. You might need to take a computer class and spend some quality time with your computer after you complete the class. A notary class and some other materials regarding electronic notarization might also be helpful. Still, some things do not change. You must follow the Notary Public Law in your state, whether you are notarizing electronically or on paper. Your customer still must personally appear before you and be properly identified. If your state requires a notary to complete a journal or register entry for each transaction, then you must record the act whether it was performed electronically or on paper. And some things do change. Even if your current job does not require you to be an approved eNotary, you could find yourself in another position down the road where eNotary work is a requirement. Having an additional tool in your bag, like eNotary skills, never hurts. Finally, the mortgage industry, real estate companies, and recorders of deeds are all trying to reduce the voluminous amount of paper they all deal with on a daily basis and working electronically certainly helps these industries eliminate some of the paper. Electronic notarization might not be the “wave of the future” this week, but it very well could be commonplace one or two years from now. Electronic Notary Initiative Moving Slowly hile electronic notarization has been touted by many as the “wave of the future,” that wave has yet to break on Pennsylvania’s shores. W Electronic notarization in Pennsylvania has been slow to catch on, with only a handful of the state’s more than 78,000 notaries getting approved as eNotaries since the country’s first eNotarization program began on Jan. 30, 2006. PAN members have seen plenty of articles and other information on the subject over the course of the last two-plus years. While notaries have hung back, counties have moved forward. When the initial program started in Pennsylvania back in January 2006, only four counties were recording documents electronically and the same four, Chester, Lancaster, Philadelphia and Westmoreland were the only places an applying notary could get identified. Now, there are 19 Pennsylvania counties participating in the program, 13 of which are only identity verification sites. In Pennsylvania, the Department of State eliminated the $40 application fee this year. The digital certificate is Protect yourself against I.D. fraud with the I.D.
