Now there’s help. PAN has teamed up with Staples, the world's largest office products company with more than 2,000 stores around the world, to provide members with substantial discounts on more than 4,000 office supplies. “About 20 percent of our members are self-employed,” said PAN President Marc Aronson. “This discount program, Staples Business Advantage, will allow our members to purchase supplies with a discount that’s typically offered to large businesses. This is a wonderful benefit.” The Staples Business Advantage includes low prices, easy online ordering and, in most cases, next day delivery. So, the owner of Gaetano’s Pharmacy in Bethel Park sold his store to Adam Rice this spring and is cutting back to 30_35 hours a week working for the new owner. “It’s wonderful working here,” Gaetano said. “It’s a lot like being in a movie or a television show. Everyone has a different story and it’s fascinating to get to know the people. Money has never been an issue for me. I just enjoy people and I enjoy being at the store.” Gaetano and his wife of 49 years, Chris, purchased the store from the Travis family with the Travises financing the deal for the new owners. “When I got started as a pharmacist, I really wanted my own store,” Gaetano said. “And after 45 years I can honestly say it has really been marvelous.” Gaetano decided he wanted to add notary public work to his resume when he was a student pharmacist. “The pharmacist I was working for back then was a notary, too,” Gaetano said. “I just felt that it was another service you could offer to your customers.” Gaetano has been a notary and a PAN member for 45 years. The notary work, like his pharmacist duties, has been rewarding. “I like helping people and as a notary you are helping people.” he says. “You’re doing professional work for people. Whether you’re helping them with a will or with an adoption, you’re helping someone with something they need.” The Gaetanos have four grown children. Daughter Leah followed her father’s footsteps and works as a pharmacist. Although he is stepping down as an owner, he’s not stepping out the door, at least not for a while. “I’m a very lucky man,” Gaetano said. “I love the work I do as a pharmacist and as a notary. I get to help people. Why would anyone want to give that up?” In an age where supersize and megachain stores are omnipresent in the market, Gaetano’s is a throwback to the days of neighborhood drug stores, where the pharmacist knew the customers by name and was willing to do more than just hand out a prescription. “We work with shut-ins and disabled people,” Gaetano said. “We will take the prescription to the customer and help in any way we can. We try to be a full-service pharmacy, 365 days a year.” In addition to health care products, the store’s shelves also are stocked with items such as toys, games, candy and newspapers.
